During tthe lesson we learnt a few technoques by following the Gerber Handbook provide by our lecturer Nicola. This is a slide by slide very of the section which I completed during lesson time which includes minipulating darts, floding a piece and creating a v neck.
Customer Research: Understanding the Consumer
During the research process I thought it would be a good
idea to understand my customer requirements and wants when it came to clothing.
I made a small questionnaire and contacted several societies for the blind and
visually impaired, I receive a vast amount of emails which aided my design
research throughout the project.
These are some of the questions I asked my target audience:
1.
What type of fabric is most appealing to the
visually impaired when choosing a garment?
2.
What helps the visually impaired to distinguish between
the back and the front of a garment?
3.
What type of fastening is most desirable?
4.
Any general problems which the visually impaired
come across when choosing clothing?
I gained some fantastic responses which helped me to develop
my ideas and solve some problems in clothing for my consumer:
The most interesting thing taken from this response was that cotton fabrics and fabrics that have a nice texture were important to the Visually Impaired. It was also helpful to note that buttons and the shape of the garment aids the consumer define between the back and front of the garment. It is apparent that buttons are considered a problem in current clothing as a fastening.
This response indicated that reading label's and identifying colours is a problem.
This was a fantastic and thorough response that aided my design process and product development. I learnt that I should focus my customer profile on a more select group of individuals and certain other points:
- Stainable fabrics are not desirable.
- Light colours are avoided as spillages can ruin clothing.
- Layering avoided removing items of crucial clothing when they get hot.
- Traditional buttons and fastenings help the garment to be fastening correctly.
- Texture is important and interesting.
- Symmetry aids the identification of a garment.
- Fabrics that don't crease are desirable as the worry of ironing is removed.
Another response indicated that fabrics depend on the function of the garment; however what was interesting was to find out that the customer still wants to portray a fashionable image in the use of interesting fabrics. Mick also reiterated the fact that fastenings are really difficult to use ' fly button is a pain'. This research has been a key element which has influenced me throughout the design process and creation of documented samples.
